It may sound a little woo-woo, but it’s scientifically proven that pausing before action can actually lead to better decision-making.
“Postponing the onset of the decision process […] enables the brain to focus attention on the most relevant information and block out irrelevant distractors,” says researcher Jack Grinband, assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center.
Pausing is especially important when it comes to emotionally-charged issues like personal finances.
This is because when we’re under stress, our bodies go into fight-flight-or-freeze mode. In this state, the frontal lobe where our higher-order thinking takes place “cuts off”. This prepares us for action, but not for rational thinking (which, unless you’re being chased by a sabre tooth tiger, is probably a bad thing).
